Why DIY Bed Bug Treatments Rarely Work

Here are the top three ways bed bug infestations are spread unintentionally.

Throwing away furniture:

Often this is the first option folks think of when faced with a bed bug infestation. Maybe you get lucky and tossing away your furniture does solve your problem. In our experience that is not always true and doing so can even spread the infestation. Here is why:

  • Bed bugs naturally hide to protect themselves. They can hide underneath baseboards, behind electrical outlets and in clothing or belongings near the infested area(s). They aren’t always exclusively on your mattress or couch!
  • While moving your bed bug infested furniture, bed bugs or eggs can drop off and continue the bed bug life cycle in your home.

Moving to sleep in another room:

Bed bugs, when left alone will do one of two things. They will lay dormant, or if someone is still present in the building, they will find them.

  • The bed bugs that go dormant and can remain dormant up to 400 days in perfect conditions. As soon as you return, the bed bugs will return to their normal feeding patterns. Bed bugs only go dormant if there is absolutely no sign of humans present in the home or building.
  • Most of the time, bed bugs will simply find you in your spare room. When this happens, it makes treatment harder as the bed bugs have now spread to other rooms throughout the house. Instead of moving rooms, we recommend having a treatment as soon as possible so that your treatment is as painless as possible!
  • If you live in multi-unit housing like an apartment or townhouse, you risk spreading the infestation to other units. The best course of action is to have a professional bed bug treatment as soon as possible!

Applying store bought bed bug sprays:

Many store bought products available in Vancouver, Canada are simply not strong enough to kill all bed bugs present and can cause adverse affects such as:

  • Aerosol Sprays – These products are typically repellents and push bed bugs away from the originally infested areas into deeper cracks and crevices as well as to other rooms or units in the building. This causes a larger infestation area and a more tricky process for treatment.
  • Diatomaceous Earth – This is usually applied incorrectly and we rarely hear about successful extermination attempts using diatomaceous earth.

Alternatively, Vancouver Bed Bug can eradicate your bed bugs in the following ways:

  • We have been serving Metro Vancouver and it’s surrounding areas for over 12 years. You are able to call us and speak with a member of our team, who can guide you through the treatment process and give you personalized advice and reassurance.
  • We use professional grade products that are non-repellents so our treatment does not spread infestations to further areas or units.
  • We stand by our treatments! Simply follow any prep instructions or personalized advice and we guarantee to eliminate your bed bug infestation!
